Never Let Me Go

I read the book named Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro. The book is a dark dystopia-type-of-novel. It is also a science-fiction book. It is a book that has gone under-the-radar. I liked it, overall, but I had my problems with the book.

Never Let Me Go is about a girl named Kathy H. Kathy H. recounts her time at a boarding school named Hailsham. At Hailsham Kathy H. had to deal with many things. She had to do with social-politics. She had to deal with growing-up. She also had to deal with love. At Hailsham Kathy H. grew-up to be the woman that she is.

She also learned a dark secret there.

I will not reveal the secret in this review, but I will say that the whole book is centered around that secret. When you read the book you can not help but to wonder, “What is this really about?” You ask, “What is Hailsham?” Finally, you ask yourself, “Why are these kids so different?”

The answer to these questions becomes apparent in the second-half of the novel. When you find-out what is really going on in the story you are shocked.

First, I will begin with the reasons why I liked this book. I liked Never Let Me Go because the novel was a good character study of the main character, Kathy H. It was interesting to get into her thoughts and into her memories.

However, in my opinion the book was too dark. I also didn’t like the fact that the author did not tell you the secret about Hailsham until the second-half of the book. Throughout most of the novel I could not help but to wonder, “What is going on here?”

Another thing that I did not like about this book is the love-story between the main character, Kathy H., and her love-interest, Tommy. I wanted there to be more about Tommy and Kathy H. I wanted the author to flesh-out more about the two character’s relationship and the love that they shared.

Overall, I give this book a 5/10 score. You should pick up this book if you like dark stories. You should also read this book if you are interested in dystopia-fiction, or if you are interested in science-fiction. However, if you want something lighter to read, then, you should give this book a pass.

Emma

I love the book, Emma, by Jane Austen. I love Jane Austen’s books in general; however, Emma is one of my favorites. I have read the book over a few times and I still find it to be an engaging and a romantic read.

Emma is about a beautiful and rich woman who lives in an English manor with her father. Emma loves going out to parties and she loves going out on outings with her other privileged neighbors. She also loves match-making. Emma tries to match-up one of her new friends… a girl named Harriet Smith. She tries to match-up Harriet with another one of her friends, a pastor named Philip Elton. However, Emma’s machinations cause more harm than good. It is Emma’s fault that Harriet’s true-love is pushed away.

While all of this is going on, Emma has to deal with other matters of the heart… her own. Emma must look deep inside-of-her-heart to figure out which man she is truly meant for… the dashing Frank Churchill or her neighbor, George Knightley. She also has to deal with her inner-jealousy against the accomplished and the poised Jane Fairfax.

Emma is a great book to read. It is a dense read because it is written in an old English style; still, I found myself loving it again when I did re-read it. If you are interested in Jane Austen, then, I think you should give this book a shot.

The Lovely Bones

I read the book, The Lovely Bones, by Alice Sebold. It’s not a book for the faint of heart. The Lovely Bones is a book about a girl named Susie Salmon. Susie Salmon is murdered. Her family tries to deal with her tragic death… and they try to discover the killer.

The Lovely Bones is a sad book and a dark book. The book is written from Susie’s perspective. Susie watches her family from her place in heaven. She watches as her family struggles to cope with her murder. She watches as her family tries to find her murderer.

I didn’t like this book. I kept reading The Lovely Bones with the hope that there would be some closure. I kept reading the book with the hope that there would be some spark of light in it. I kept reading the book with the hope that there would be a rhyme or a reason to the madness. Sadly, there was none.

I think that you should not read this book. I think that you should skip this book instead. There is so much more to read out there. You should save yourself the pain and the heartache.
