The Book Thief

The book that I want to talk about today is a book named The Book Thief. The Book Thief is written by the author named Markus Zusak. The Book Thief is a sad but hopeful story. The book is about a girl named Liesel Meminger. Liesel is sent to live with the Hubermann family.

Liesel must learn and grow-up in a town in Nazi Germany during World War II. Liesel is different than any of the children in the town because she can not read. However, she learns to read by her foster-father named Hans Hubermann. While Liesel grows-up during this difficult time period Hans decides to hide a Jewish man in the Hubermann’s home. The Jewish man is named Max Vandenburg.

Vandenburg hides and Liesel learns to see him as her friend. She even practices to read with Vandenburg. While this is going on there are book burnings in the Hubermann’s town. Liesel loves the written word. She steals books and hides them without anyone knowing.

This book is a touching book. I think Liesel is smart and strong. She learns how to read. She also learns to care for a Jewish man. Liesel’s life is filled with fear and sorrow; however, she continues to try to do what she must do. Liesel learns to read. She also learns the power and beauty of the written word.

This was a good book to read. Still, it was a very sad book. If you are interested in this book, then, I think you should pick-up the book named The Diary of Anne Frank instead. The Diary of Anne Frank is a book about a young Jewish girl during World War II.

Always with infinite love,
Selena London
